U.S. electric car plan expected to benefit Korea, Japan

U.S. President Barack Obama’s plan to roll out one million electric cars on the nation’s roads by 2015 is projected to be a boon for advanced battery makers here.

Forbes magazine reported on Sunday that the U.S. lacks advanced battery manufacturers compared to Korea and Japan.

While the U.S. government is nurturing the battery industry in Michigan, its development is slow and it lags behind that of Korea, the magazine said.

It pointed out that battery plants in Michigan for GM’s Volt electric car are located near airports in order to have better access to lithium-ion battery cells imported from Korea.
