Companies in East Asia and the Pacific used the most electricity but sourced only 18.5 per cent from renewables, versus 68 per cent in North America, the International Telecommunication Union found.
The voluntary Antalya Pledge asks governments and companies to disclose data centre energy use and shift to renewables, as US and Chinese AI build‑outs are set to drive most of this decade’s extra electricity demand.
As Malaysia targets greater renewable energy penetration and data centres drive up electricity demand, experts say the country will need a more flexible, transparent and digitally enabled grid by 2035.
The country's energy regulator said data centres now account for 9.28 per cent of total electricity consumption, while prolonged hot weather due to El Niño is driving up cooling demand and forcing Malaysia to reassess its power needs.
