India, China to submit emission pledge ‘well before’ December

China and India, the world’s top and third-most polluting countries, will submit plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions “as early as possible” and “well before” the December international conference on climate change in Paris.

The two countries will work together to advance global negotiations for an agreement at the Paris meeting, according to a joint statement on climate change, posted on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s website Friday.

Modi began a visit to China on Thursday to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese business leaders.

The 2015 agreement should take into account “the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities,” between developed and developing countries, according to the statement.

Switzerland, the US and the European Union are among those who have submitted their pledges for emission cuts.
