Researchers in the United Kingdom have singled out Australia, Canada and the United States as the worst offenders on climate emissions, based on a combination of size and emissions per person. Citing coal as a major source, experts said Australia’s 2011 emissions were 17.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide per person, compared to 16.3 tonnes in 2010. The US, along with Europe, reduced emissions in the same period. China and India were among the highest emitters overall, but their emissions growth has not caught up to their population growth.

The experts called for radical policy changes, saying current amibitions were inadequate.
