Green Productivity Training Workshop

Workshop introduction

Green Productivity (GP), as a business and industry practice championed by Asian Productivity Organization (APO) since 1990s, addresses both productivity and sustainability needs, so that environmental and business performance gains can be achieved simultaneously with increased efficiency, material and cost savings, and therefore profitability. Workshop will equip participants with the knowledge and tools to:

• Perform an audit of their workplace and identify opportunities to improve their productivity and environmental performance;
• Apply practical tools to analyse and improve the productivity of their operations;

The GP methodology

The GP methodology comprises 6 steps and 13 tasks and is based on the continuous application of the PDCA cycle to achieve Kaizen at work place.

What make the approach special is that it includes an investigative walk- through process of the entire workplace and reviews resource utilisation at each step through the technique of material balance.

It brings about the opportunity to apply the various productivity tools and environmental techniques. GP has been successfully implemented in various industry sectors.

Successful case of GP implementation

This case study focuses on Intel’s operations in Penang, Malaysia and the company’s adoption of the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) policy that committed them to conserving natural resources and reducing environmental waste and emissions.

They implemented green productivity strategies such as waste minimization, total chemical management, 5R pollution prevention and community environmental initiatives. This led to a positive environment impact, savings generated in operational costs as well as an enhanced image and reputation.

Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA)

This technique is mobilised under GP that help traces and quantifies the flows and stocks of materials within an organization in physical and monetary units. It is applicable to both large companies & SMEs, including service industries besides manufacturing firms.

Workshop Facilitators

Patrick Chan is MD of GAC Enterprise, with green project management experience across China, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. Patrick was a Senior Green Business Development Advisor with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and a project director for consultancy projects across Asia Pacific for ADB and Global Green Growth Institute.

He is trained as a Green Productivity Consultant and Trainer by Asian Productivity Organization (APO) sponsored by SPRING Singapore. He is also a Practising Management Consultant (PMC) and PMC (Bilingual) by Singapore Business Advisors and Consultants Council, and an ACTA certified trainer by Workforce Development Agency. He has served as lead trainer for National Environment Agency for Environment Champion training for Corporates, NGOs and Schools, training >500 corporate executives over the years.

Prior to founding his company, he was the Director of Industry Development for Singapore Business Federation, where he was the Director of Singapore Sustainability Alliance, and served in various management roles across ISCA, CBI, NUS Enterprise, KPMG and SIA.He had served as an advisor to the Centre of Innovation for Environmental and Water Technologies in Ngee Ann Poly. He was also a member of the international advisory board of World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Green, and Business Sustainability Committee of SPRING Singapore.

Kelvin Chan, Director and Principal Consultant of Teian Consulting International, has a strong passion for productivity, green productivity, business excellence and its related techniques. He is a Registered Management Consultant (RMC) certified under the Enterprise Singapore’s Consultant Quality Initiative and a Fellow Certified Management Consultant (FCMC) of the Institute of Management Consultants (Singapore). He was awarded the Honorary Certified Productivity Practitioners Certification by the Asian Productivity Organization in 2015. He was appointed as Chief Resource Person for the APO’s 3-week Training of Trainers and Consultants in Green Productivity program in Taipei, ROC from 2015 – 2018.

He served as an Associate Facility in the School of Science and Technology of the Singapore University of Social Sciences. He is a SPRING-JPC Certified Productivity Consultant and SPRING Certified Business Excellence Consultant. He has more than 30 years of experience in Productivity-related subjects and together with his consulting team; he has assisted more than 700 companies in Singapore. He has assisted many National Productivity Organisations in Asia and completed numerous training and consultancy assignments for the APO-Africa Productivity Partnership Project funded by the Government of Japan and Taiwan. Over the years, he has trained more than 1000 Productivity Consultants / Trainers from countries like Colombia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, India, Iran, Fiji, Pakistan, Indonesia, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand.
