Trenergy frontrunner for SEB transmission line

Trenergy Infrastructure Sdn Bhd, the contractor for the power transmission line from Bakun dam in Kapit to Samalaju in Bintulu, is a frontrunner to secure Sarawak Energy Bhd’s proposed transmission line from Bintulu to Kuching.

Trenergy, which is expected to be acquired by Sarawak Cable Bhd (SCB), has bid for the project’s phase one and two contracts, estimated to be worth RM400mil and RM600mil respectively.

Tenders closed about five months ago.

SCB group managing director and chief executive officer Toh Chee Ching confirmed yesterday that SCB had tendered, through Trenergy, for the 500kV transmission line project.

“Sarawak Energy is expected to award the phase one contract latest by next month. Phase one spanning about 200km will connect Similajau, Bintulu and Tada, Sibu.

“Contract for phase two is expected to be awarded six months after the award of phase one. The proposed 340km transmission line will connect Tada with Kuching,” Toh said after SCB AGM.

Sarawak Energy is SCB’s single-biggest shareholder with a 21.56 per cent stake.

SCB now plans to acquire the entire equity interest in Trenergy by cash instead of a 65 per cent stake via the issuance of new shares as announced last August. SCB will raise money from a private placement to finance Trenergy’s acquisition.

Toh said Trenergy was also the contractor for the RM100mil transmission line to connect the 944MW Murum hydro dam, which is now under construction.

“The transmission line will be completed this year,” he added.

Toh said two other power transmission line projects were now under tendering stage.

They are the proposed line to connect OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s manganese and ferroalloy plant in Samalaju Industrial Park and the proposed Mambong-Serikin line to enable Sarawak Energy to export electricity to west Kalimantan.
