Singapore, 4 July 2025 - Today, Singapore makes history with the official launch of the Music Climate Action Pledge, the first industry-led sustainability commitment for live music in Southeast Asia, in partnership with the Bye Bye Plastic Foundation and its global #PlasticFreeParty campaign.

This pledge calls on the live music industry—venues, festivals, artists, promoters, and agents—to work collectively to eliminate single-use plastics from live music events, starting with plastic straws, cups, and water bottles within the next 12 months.

The Music Climate Action Pledge is hosted by Sundown Festival, Singapore’s homegrown celebration of music, culture, and climate action, together with Bye Bye Plastic Foundation, founded by DJ and activist BLOND:ISH. The foundation has catalysed global movements across Europe and the Americas, and now, for the first time, brings its impact to Asia.

“Music connects us, and collective action is the solution. We believe the earth is our dancefloor, and there is no music on a dead planet,” said Stephanie Dickson, host of the Music Climate Action Summit and founder of The Wedge Asia. “This pledge is about transforming the live music industry in Singapore into a leader in climate action.”

“I am humbled for us to be starting an impact chapter in Singapore thanks to Sundown & The Wedge. After feeling the pulse of the region by activating Bali back in 2020, setting to work with Singapore’s music events scene feels like a natural & solid evolution for the foundation,” says Camille Guitteau, co-founder of Bye Bye Plastic Foundation.

Why it matters

The live music industry is a vibrant driver of culture and community but is also a significant contributor to single-use plastic pollution. Festivals and events often rely heavily on disposable cups, straws, and bottles, contributing to landfill waste and environmental degradation.

Through the Music Climate Action Pledge, signatories commit to:

  • Phasing out at least two of the “big three” plastics (straws, cups, bottles) within 12 months.
  • Participating in quarterly meetings for shared learning, operational guidance, and community support.
  • Accessing vetted supplier recommendations for sustainable alternatives.
  • Tracking and showcasing progress collectively at the Music Climate Action Summit 2026.

This structure ensures the pledge is practical, action-oriented, and community-led, empowering organisations to transform operations while amplifying climate-conscious culture within their communities.

A movement powered by Bye Bye Plastic Foundation

Founded by DJ and activist BLOND:ISH, Bye Bye Plastic Foundation has worked globally with artists, festivals, and venues to shift the industry away from single-use plastics and has already mobilised bover 1,500 artists and 100+ venues globally through initiatives like the Eco-Rider, Clean The Beat, and the #BYOB #BringYourOwnBottle campaign. Collectively, these efforts have kept over 13 tonnes of single-use plastic items out of circulation. The #PlasticFreeParty campaign offers a structured transition guide for venues, making it easier for the industry to take immediate action.

Launched at the Music Climate Action Summit

The pledge is officially launched today at the Music Climate Action Summit at Skechers Sundown Festival, a new industry convening for Southeast Asia focused on sustainability in the live music sector. The Summit features speakers from the United Nations Entertainment & Culture for Climate Action, Believe, Music Declares Emergency, Singapore Environment Council, Resorts World Sentosa, Gig Life Pro, and other industry leaders.

During the summit, the pledge members will participate in an on-stage signing ceremony, symbolising their commitment to climate action while showcasing a united industry front.

What’s next

Over the next year, the Music Climate Action Pledge will:

  • Grow its cohort across Singapore and the region, building momentum for a plastic-free live music culture.
  • Provide practical toolkits and peer learning sessions to support signatories in implementing changes.
  • Develop a collaborative impact report to showcase progress at the Music Climate Action Summit 2026.
  • Explore partnerships with government and industry bodies to scale reusable infrastructure across nightlife and events in Singapore.
