REA to build renewable energy projects in northwest China

Singapore-listed Renewable Energy Asia Group (REA) will develop a wind farm of up to 1.2GW in capacity over a ten-year period, plus hydro and biomass projects in Gansu Province, China.

The Jiuquan government of Gansu Province will provide the land resources and infrastructure for the wind farm project, according to REA.

REA will develop a 100MW PV power generation demonstration facility together with a solar cell component production plant for the wind farm project.

The contract also includes the building of hydropower and biomass power generation facilities, with planned capacities of 500MW and 36MW respectively.

In addition, REA will invest in a production facility to produce wheel hubs, nacelle casings, foundations, wind turbine towers and connecting flanges to cater for up to 2,000 sets of wind turbines with capacities ranging from 1.5-5MW annually.

The renewable energy developments are in line with the Jiuquan government’s plans to tap on the city’s natural resources to produce energy, and improve its technological expertise in the renewables industry.

The large-scale developments are also in conjunction with China’s Five-Year Plan by the National Development and Reform Commission to raise the country’s energy efficiency and output.

Since REA’s foray into the wind energy sector in less than a year, the company has sealed co-operative agreement with China Datang Corporation Renewable Power to jointly engage in wind farm related activities.

The company has also recently signed an agreement for a potential acquisition that will give it a stake in Datang Baotou Asia Electricity, which has wind farm development projects in Huaishuo, Inner Mongolia.
