Methane leak evidence may hurt image of coal seam gas

New research has disclosed that vast amounts of methane are leaking undetected from Australia’s biggest coal seam gas field in Queensland. Researchers from Southern Cross University have found that the Tara gas field has greenhouse gas levels over three times compared to surrounding areas. Significant methane and carbon dioxide leaks, said the study, have surfaced in the soil and bubbling up in the rivers. The study’s findings will have implications on Australia’s projected massive expansion of coal seam gas drilling. Australian authorities are currently assessing proposals by  AGL to drill 66 new coal seam gas wells in Sydney.
