Tighten building energy standards to avoid energy dilemma

Global energy management firm Schneider Electric is pushing for stricter green building energy standards for Malaysia, said the company’s Malaysian president Peter Cave in a statement.

“Positive changes in the industry can avoid an energy dilemma and help the government achieve its Copenhagen promise,” Mr Cave said, referring to a new energy standard he hopes to see included in a 28 September discussion of next year’s budget.

Over the complete life cycle of a building, the bulk of the expenses are operating costs - a fact that can be mitigated with energy standards such as ISO50001, he explained. He added that tax incentives that rewarded building developers who integrated energy management would promote energy efficiency and help Malaysia cope with rising electricity demands.
