Taiwan plans to triple use of green energy by 2030

Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang said Tuesday the government will more than triple Taiwan’s capacity to generate electricity using renewable energy by 2030 amid increasing public concerns over nuclear safety.

Addressing Taiwan’s energy policy at a colloquium made up of mostly anti-nuclear scholars, Shih said the government will aim at increasing the percentage of renewable energy in the overall power-generating capacity from 6% to 19% or 20% by 2030.

But, Shih said, his ministry will not take nuclear power out of the mix in the future because it remains an energy source that can reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
