Sustainable aquaculture: Catching in Vietnam

What does it take to get Vietnamese fish farmers to raise their practices up to export standard? Results. Thousands of aquaculture farmers in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta have taken up the Vietnamese Good Agriculture Practices (VietGAP) for sustainable fish farming because they find they raise healthier fish that are easier to sell for export.

Vietnam has the world’s fourth largest aquaculture industry. It currently produces 1.35 million tonnes of tra fish and annually exports about 660,000 tonnes to 130 countries. However, industry experts  have cautioned that the sector’s rapid growth presents risks such as disease outbreaks, environmental pollution and food safety problems. They urged farmers to join the VietGAP programme to reduce these risks and to ensure products are traceable, and consequently more attractive to foreign markets.
