Preparing for India’s national green building code

As India prepares to draft a National Building code containing sustainability provisions, the country assesses whether it is really sensible to construct a green building in India. In India, constructing green buildings is still expensive, which is why it had taken several years for the sustainability movement to gain momentum there, said Delhi-based urban economist Tanaji Chakravorty. But those are now showing that sustainability in construction will give long-term energy savings, he said. Chakravorty said, however, that while sustainable construction has already started with commercial and institutional properties, it has yet to extend to the residential sector.
