China warns of solar trade dispute spill-over

The anti-dumping duties that the European Union is considering imposing on Chinese solar companies could lead to additional trade disputes and harm bilateral ties, warned senior China trade representative Chong Quan on Friday. He urged the EU, which has begun a 15-month investigation into imports of Chinese solar products, to solve tensions through talks rather than through punitive measures.

Several EU solar players have accused Chinese solar manufacturers of flooding the market with solar products at below-cost, a process known as ‘dumping’ that is used to take market share away from competitors.

Chong Quan called the solar industry trade between the two entities a win-win, because it created jobs for Europeans and a Chinese market for Europe’s raw materials and technology, in addition to providing sales for Chinese firms. The industry’s current woes affected both Chinese and EU companies, he added.
