Has Malaysia hit on a winning eco-city model?

A new $30 billion “smart metropolis” is set to rise just across from Singapore in Malaysia. The Malaysian government has carved out an area in Iskandar, Malaysia for what developers are calling ‘the future of urban life in Southeast Asia.’

The ultra-modern but ecological mega-city is expected to accommodate a population of three million by 2025. To support that population, Malaysian planners and private developers will integrate renewable energy sources, innovative waste management and public transport.  The eco-city is being built as a template for other Southeast Asian cities as an answer to their fast-growing urban populations.
