Alaine Johnson

Writer

Alaine Johnson is a final-year Environmental Studies major at Yale-NUS College specializing in Rural Development in Southeast Asia. She is originally from the rainy city of Seattle, WA and has lived half her life abroad in Thailand, Guatemala, Swaziland, and now Singapore. She is intrigued by how rural communities might develop in environmentally sustainable, socially communitarian ways, in part by embracing innovative technologies and new social arrangements.

To this end, her senior capstone project focuses on the revival of heirloom coffee in Manila coffeehouses and its impact on agrarian society in the far reaches of the Cordillera Mountains in the Philippines. In her free time, she enjoys learning new types of martial arts and running in the rain.
