Writing the future together

[The EB Podcast] In this concluding episode of the Let’s Write the Future series, we explore how the rise of renewable energy, the electrification of transport and the Fourth Industrial Revolution are changing our lives, cities, and the world.

The world is in the midst of two simultaneous revolutions that will completely change the way we live, how our cities work and operate, and the impact that humans have on the environment.

First, the nature of energy is slowly but surely shifting from stable but polluting fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas to clean but intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy.

And second, technologies such as cars and trains, along with heating and cooling systems, which have for decades been powered by burning fuels are going electric.

These radical transformations will have a global impact, and coincide with other emerging trends such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution which is bringing an unprecedented dimension of intelligence and analytics to technologies that have until now focused mostly on mechanical performance.

As these trends collide, how will technology deliver a more sustainable and liveable world? Will tech-heavy smart cities be the new global norm, even in developing countries? And how will humans need to change the way they learn and work to keep up with the pace of technological change?

In this concluding episode of the ABB-supported Let’s Write the Future Series, we sat down with Bazmi Husain, ABB’s chief technology officer to discuss the big picture of how technology is changing the trajectory of global society, and how, as ABB’s slogan suggests, people from all walks of life and areas of society can write the future together.

Tune in as we discuss questions such as:

  • What makes a city smart, and what are the biggest challenges and opportunities when deploying smart city technologies?
  • What skills and knowledge should young people today be pursuing to thrive in the new digital world?
  • Where is the most exciting technological innovation in the world happening?
