North America has emerged as a leader in sustainable steel production, with the region achieving the lowest average carbon intensity per ton of steel produced globally. This progress is underpinned by a high reliance on electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, which now accounts for 70% of North American steel production, alongside advancements in recycling practices that yield over 80 million metric tons of scrap steel annually.
Looking ahead, the focus is shifting towards optimising existing production processes, improving resource utilisation, and enhancing overall competitiveness in a dynamic global market. However, critical challenges, including energy infrastructure modernisation and cross-border policy harmonisation, remain central to achieving these ambitious goals.
