UNEP and Climate Action renew partnership in run up to Paris 2015

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and leading media organisation, Climate Action, today announced a two year renewal of their ongoing partnership, building on over seven years of collaboration to increase awareness of climate change issues within the private sector.

In the run up to 2015 and beyond, this important and timely alliance between Climate Action and the UNEP will serve to galvanise commercial involvement in the fight against climate change and its global effects, alongside UNEP, global Government and NGOs.

Seven years of fruitful collaboration between UNEP and Climate Action, beginning in 2007, has led to a major increase of private sector involvement in mobilising the green economy. This unique partnership will also continue to highlight innovative and sustainable solutions that can aid global Governments in sustainable development and the post-2015 agenda.

Director General of UNEP and Under- Secretary of United Nations, Achim Steiner commented: ‘I wish to express my sincere appreciation to Climate Action and the Henley Media Group for continued support and contribution to the United Nations Environment.’ He continued: ‘I would like to commend (Climate Action) for the value added to UNEP’s work and particularly in enhancing private public partnerships’.

UNEP, established in 1972, is the voice for the environment within the United Nations system and the leading global environmental authority. UNEP sets the global environmental agenda to promote the coherent implementation of environmental dimensions of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Climate Action was established in 2007 to establish and build partnerships between business, government and public bodies to accelerate international sustainable development and advance the green economy.

Over the last seven years, Climate Action has identified and distilled the most valuable elements that build productive partnerships between the private and public sectors. Climate Action’s ongoing research programme assesses and evaluates what is needed to engage business, governments and public institutions, and has designed a programme of activity that brings true sustainable value.

Nick Henry, Managing Director of Climate Action commented: ‘Since we began this journey in 2007, the unique partnership that UNEP and Climate Action share has enabled a lot of progression. With 2015 on the horizon, we look forward to continuing to assist in the incredible climate challenge our world faces, shoulder to shoulder with UNEP.’

Climate Action Programme and UNEP have also announced the hosting of the Sustainable Innovation Forum 2014 (http://cop20lima.org) to run alongside the UNFCCC COP 20 climate negotiations. At this leading commercially inclusive Forum held on 9 December in Lima, world leaders, CEOs, senior executives, national, regional and city leaders, investors and industry experts seeking to address climate change, accelerate green growth and sustainable development will convene to progress the agenda.

Climate Action Director, Claire Poole, commented, “Lima represents a crucial milestone in the climate change dialogue, it’s vital that all stakeholders are part of the conversation.”

Previous editions of Sustainable Innovation Forum were addressed by industry luminaries such as Achim Steiner, Under Secretary General of the United Nations and UNEP Executive Director; Janez Potocnik, Commissioner for Environment, European Commission and Eduardo Durand, Director of Climate Change, Desertification and Water Resources, Peru Ministry of Environment.
