Inaugural sustainability and design show for eco-lifestyle consumers launched

The inaugural Green Living 2015 exhibition was announced on May 28 at the ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands, by Reed Exhibitions.

The exhibition is conceptualized to be Singapore’s dedicated sustainability and design show held in conjunction with The International Green Building Conference (IGBC) 2015, Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia and Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) Asia. The series of events are all part of the Singapore Green Building Week (SGBW) that happens from 31 August to 6 September 2015.

Green Living 2015 is positioned as the first lifestyle event that focuses on meeting the needs of eco-conscious consumers and businesses as well as educating the public on how to adopt an “eco-lifestyle”.

The event builds on the success of BEX Asia and IGBC which have thus far focused on being a platform for policy makers, building professionals, academics and the build environment industry players. Over the years, there has been a significant increase awareness and adoption of sustainable built environment within the building and corporate sector.

Recognizing that end-users too have an important role to play in the sustainable built environment eco-system, Green Living 2015 will complete the circle in Singapore’s dedication to sustainable built environment and living.

In her welcome address, Ms. Michelle Lim, Managing Director, Reed Exhibitions, explained the need for such a platform while calling for collaboration and support of stakeholders, partners and companies to partake in Singapore’s first eco-lifestyle event.

The growing awareness and desire amongst consumers for an environmentally sensitive lifestyle has led to a growing demand for eco-products. A study by Nielsen found that 55 per cent of global online consumers across 60 countries are actually willing to pay more for products and services provided by companies that are committed to positive social and environmental impact.

The event aims to present some 100 participating companies who will be showcasing products such as eco-appliances, machines and electronics, eco-interiors, smart home automation technology, green homes and buildings, renewable energy and environmental technology and greenery.

The event is expected to open its doors to more than 10,000 visitors over the three-day show. Some of the companies interested to be part of this event include BMW, City Developments Limited, Eubiq, Garden Asia, Ikea, Marina Bay Sands, Mitsubishi, Ong & Ong, Panasonic and many others.

Ms. Lim added that, “Visitors and exhibitors at Green Living 2015 can expect to see interesting showcases of technology and ideas, participate in fun activities, workshops plus gain knowledge on how to lead an eco-lifestyle”.

As the first eco-lifestyle show in Singapore, Green Living 2015 is organized along the three pillars of modern living, “Live, Work & Play” with various galleries and zones to showcase products and ideas. One such highlight is the Singapore Green Story, a private-public collaboration presented by various Singapore government agencies and industry organisations; curated by leading architectural firm, Ong & Ong. The Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS) will also be presenting a showcase of SG Mark Winners alongside a showcase of green offices and eco-friendly cars and automotive technology.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA), together with Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS) and the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) are strategic partners of this event.

Dr. John Keung, Chief Executive Officer of BCA, said, “The theme for the Singapore Green Building Week (SGBW) this year is “Build Green, Live Smart”, which is in line with the objectives of Singapore’s 3rd Green Building Masterplan and complements Singapore’s vision of a Smart Nation. The introduction of “Green Living” aligns perfectly with SGBW’s goal to engage and empower a wider pool of end users to drive a change in mindset and behaviour in energy consumption, while enhancing occupant well-being in green premises. We strongly believe that the new B to B to C platform that “Green Living” is built upon will offer new opportunities for businesses and partnership and extend to a wider community.”

As the advocate of applying good design in business, DBCS also acknowledged the role that good design plays in a sustainable eco-lifestyle. Mr. Tai Lee Siang, President of DBCS said “The tremendous scalability of design now has people readily embracing it as more than just an aesthetic; design has become a system, a problem solver and even a way of life. We are delighted that Green Living 2015 offers us the opportunity to celebrate the sustainable designs of the dedicated and talented behind them and bring them close to the public”

A recent study by Allied Market Research concludes that the global smart home and buildings market is expect to grow at a CAGR of 29.5 per cent between 2012 and 2020. The market revenue of S$4.8 billion in 2012 is expected to grow up to S$35.3 billion by 2020. Singapore’s leading property developer, City Developments Limited (CDL) and a strategic sponsor of Green Living 2015, has been a strong advocate of the green building movement.

“Increased concerns about climate change will likely lead to rising green consumerism and demand for green living. Apart from providing green buildings, developers are expected to offer a new wave of eco features such as sustainable urban farming, skyrise greenery, intelligent energy management and productive construction methods. For close to two decades, CDL has remained steadfast in our commitment to green buildings and promoting sustainable living and development. For a new development, we have been investing 2% to 5% of the construction cost on eco-friendly features and innovations. Through greener and smarter buildings, we strive to create stronger consumer value, product differentiation and brand equity,” said Ms. Esther An, CDL Chief Sustainability Officer.

Mr. Chia Ngiang Hong, President, SGBC added that “There are over 460 corporate members in SGBC today and Green Living 2015 presents our members with another excellent platform for them to spread the word about their environmentally friendly products and solutions. We hope to see many industry players step forward to participate in Green Living 2015 and fill the demand by end-users for ideas, products and solutions to help them on their journey to lead an eco-lifestyle”.
