Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Singapore) Ltd. (Hitachi GST Singapore) was today named a winner of the President’s Award for the Environment 2010 by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR). The award recognizes the significant contributions of Hitachi GST in Singapore toward environmental and water resources sustainability. Hitachi GST Singapore was one of only three winners to receive this award, the government’s highest accolade in the area of environmental protection.
Hitachi GST Singapore, employer of more than 2,500, is committed to creating a sustainable society. This award recognizes its outstanding efforts both in the pursuit of excellence and in achievement of remarkable results in environmental performance. By implementing sustained environmental protection measures, the company has accomplished significant resource conservation across its operations. Since 2003, Hitachi has realized a 62% reduction in water consumption and 58% reduction in energy consumption through water and energy conservation programs at its Singapore site. Since 2005, the company’s waste minimization program also has resulted in a recycling rate of more than 96% and reduction of its landfill disposal rate to less than 1%.

The 2010 President’s Award is the latest recognition of the company’s long-term efforts and rich experience with environmental protection programs. In 2006, Hitachi GST Singapore was one of only two companies recognized with the Singapore Environment Council (SEC)’s Singapore Environmental Achievement Award. The National Environment Agency (NEA) presented its EcoFriend Award to Hitachi GST Singapore in 2008 in recognition of the company’s efforts to enhance environmental awareness and promote an ecological mindset among younger generations. The company also received the Public Utility Board (PUB)’s Watermark Award in 2009 for its contribution toward protecting water resources and its continuous efforts to raise awareness among youth, employees and family members.
