Development of pongamia as a biofuel crop has largely been underway in India, at CJP where scientists have been assessing new crops to support sustainable rural development. There is significant interest in developing pongamia as a new source of biofuel. Its reputation in India as a sustainable rural fuel source, combined with its ability to establish on low fertility soils Cultivars are being selected that will yield seeds with up to 40% oil. The plant has attracted research interest due to its reputation as a drought tolerant crop and its traditional use as a source of oil for lamp fuel Pongamia has a long history of use by people. Research and field trials to assess the species’ capacity to produce biofuel have been underway at Centre for Jatropha Promotion & Biodiesel (CJP). After having a number of successful field trials CJP has honor to establish Pongamia Pinnata- an untapped resource as alternative source for Bio- Diesel industry of future and has already released Pongamia Pinnata crop cultivation technology
There are many nonfood oil crop under field trials and experiments and after several years of research, CJP has got an improved highly yielding and early maturing variety of the Pongamia Pinnata and developed enhanced crop cultivation technology with more yield and more oil .Now we can ensure an oil yield of 330 gallon in 4th year, 1000 gallon in 7th year and 2000 gallon in 10th year from 1 ha plantation of this amazing crop and that too after leaving 70% land for other crops. Pongamia Pinnata will yield at Maturity as high as 1000 gallon oil per ha which shall reached as high as 3400 gallon in 15th year and shall be on higher side year by year up to>60 years with minimum crop care cost. This is truly an exceptional amount of oil from an agricultural crop.
The Pongamia Pinnata tree must be regarded as a sure source of 2nd Generation Biodiesel and the foundation around which a profitable Business plan can be built for its ability to provide large amount of oil and its pure hardiness and stress handling ability.
The Pongamia Pinnata is tree that has enough credentials: a higher recovery and quality of oil than other crops, no direct competition with food crops as it is a non-edible source of fuel, and no direct competition with existing farmland as it can be grown on degraded and marginal land. As a legume it is also able to fix its own nitrogen from the soil, minimizing the need for added fertilizers. Emergence of the new crop system may change the entire scenario of the biodiesel industry and shall provide much relief to the industry which desperately in a need of a viable sustainable non-food feed stocks.
