Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (President: Kengo Sakurada; hereinafter, “Sompo Japan”) and Nipponkoa Insurance Co., Ltd. (President: Masaya Futamiya; hereinafter, “Nipponkoa”) will implement the SAVE JAPAN Project jointly from FY2013. This is a community-based, participatory biodiversity conservation project undertaken in collaboration with environmental NPOs/NGOs and other organizations across Japan.
In FY2013, with Nipponkoa joining the project further expanding the circle of activities, we will provide opportunities for communities to nurture interest in their local natural environments.
1. How the SAVE JAPAN Project Works
When their customers purchase automobile insurance, selecting the “web-based insurance clause” option, Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa will make donations to environmental NPOs/NGOs and other organizations according to the number of such contracts concluded. Environmental NPOs/NGOs will use the donations to implement community-based participatory environmental preservation activities, in partnership with Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa.
To ensure that the project is clear to community members and contributes to the protection of endangered species, it will be carried out in collaboration with environmental organizations very familiar with the local communities and the Japan NPO Center (JNPOC).
* Web-based insurance clause refers to the automobile insurance terms and conditions that may be viewed online on the official websites of Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa.
2. Policy for Activities in FY2013
Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa will carry out environmental preservation activities to protect endangered species in all areas throughout Japan.
Examples of endangered species include the Chokai spherical moss in Akita Prefecture, the Japanese firefly in Hyogo Prefecture, the Japanese giant flying squirrel in Kumamoto Prefecture, and the Okinawa Rail in Okinawa Prefecture.
Applications for participation in the various areas’ activities and reports on the activities implemented will be made available regularly on the dedicated website below.
