CompEx (meaning Competency in Ex atmospheres) is a global certification scheme for electrical and mechanical crafts-persons and designers working in potentially explosive atmospheres. Developed for professional engineers, CompEx Unit Ex12 completes the safety linkage across the lifecycle of the hazardous area workplace from design through plant commissioning and operation.
The Ex12 offering is made for engineers who design applications and systems for potentially explosive atmospheres, in line with the requirements of the international standard IEC 60079 Part 14. It is also suitable for professional engineers responsible for managing these hazardous workplaces through their commissioning and operating life.
The recent ATEC addition of the Ex12 Unit means the CompEx scheme now allows access to competency and certification for a wider range of personnel and situations. They include electrical, mechanical and multi-skilled craftspeople; professional engineers responsible for the design & installation of applications and systems and for managers who oversee the operation of these installations.
Sheryl Bihler, Group Technical Authority advised “that all assemblers become competent in the requirements of selecting and installing equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. Compliance with Ex safety regulations is a team effort and one that must begin with the application and system design and also the equipment selection phases of each project.”
