Following the recent Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE), Hong Kong’s leading green hotel, Eaton, Hong, Kong, was awarded with the coveted Gold Certification. The Hotel also went on to receive a special mention in the Green Hotelier Awards for Asia Pacific in 2015.
The EarthCheck Gold Certification is regarded as the world’s most scientifically rigorous environmental management programme. It is designed specifically for the travel and tourism industry and is reserved for organisations that have consistently demonstrated an ongoing commitment to support their local communities and who have maintained the highest standards of environmental management over a period of at least five years.
In order to achieve Gold status, Eaton,Hong Kong has had to report its environmental performance to the independent auditor and in doing so be benchmarked against international best practice standards taken from the global Travel and Tourism Industry. An in-depth on-site assessment was also conducted with the Hotel achieving the highest best practice rating in eight sections, including policy, minimising energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, potable water consumption, water saving ratings, waste sent to landfill and the ratings of paper and cleaning products used.
Furthermore, Eaton, Hong Kong’s own water bottling system won the judges’ appreciation in receiving a special mention in the Green Hotelier Awards for Asia Pacific in 2015. Orgranised by greenhotelier.org, the award recognises applicants ranged from small eco lodges to large corporate hotels who display a genuine passion for sustainability. In the award announcement, judges praised the Hotel for being the first to install its own water bottling system, along with the introduction of refillable guest amenities, which saves a total of 850,000 pieces of plastic waste each year.
