Climate Goal gets China and India support

Washington, 9 March - China and India formally agreed Tuesday to join the international climate change agreement reached in December in Copenhagen, the last two major economies to sign up.

Insight — 28 February - As signs of climate instability increase, radical and rapid action is becoming ever more urgent. One of the biggest obstacles to global collaboration, however, has been the foot-dragging and obstructionism of the US government, much of it based on the fear of giving Southern economies a ‘competitive advantage’ if they are permitted to emit greenhouse gases at higher rates than the North.

New deal unlikely this year: De Boer

Nusa Dua, 27 February - A new climate treaty is unlikely to be inked this year, UN climate chief Yvo de Boer says, citing that there is no time for both rich and poor countries to recover from last December’s failed Copenhagen summit.

 

Indonesia to tackle climate change on its own

Jakarta, 11 February - Indonesia’s leading climate change advisor said yesterday he thinks global consensus on climate change cannot be reached, but hinted at a national strategy currently underway that would allow Indonesia to move forward on tackling the effects of environmental degradation without waiting for another round of international negotiations.

Nations' greenhouse gas pledges too small: UN

Bonn, 3 February - Fifty- five nations have met a Jan 31 deadline to submit pledges to the United Nations for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. But UN officials said they are not enough to forestall the effects of climate change by mid-century.

55 countries make their emission pledges to UN

Bonn, 1 February - The United Nations climate body said it has received submissions of national pledges to cut and limit greenhouse gases by 2020 from 55 countries, who together account for 78 per cent of global emissions from energy use.

UN drops deadline for countries to state climate change targets

Bonn, 20 January - The UN has dropped the 31 January deadline by which time all countries were expected to officially state their emission reduction targets or list the actions they planned to take to counter climate change.
