Forest fire races through DMZ

Firefighters are struggling to contain a forest fire that started in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas on Monday morning and is spreading quickly to the South Korean side.

A military spokesman said the fire appears to have started at a farm near a North Korean billet. “North Korean soldiers are also trying to extinguish the fire, so it does not appear to have been set by the North,” he added.

The Unification Ministry restricted access to the joint Kaesong Industrial Complex on Monday due to safety concerns.

The fire is estimated to have devastated around 1 million sq.m of forest in the DMZ as of 8pm Monday.
