Bogor prohibits building on wetlands

The Bogor administration will no longer issue building permits for those wishing to build on wetlands and cultivation areas.

Bogor Deputy Mayor Usman Harimun said that wetlands and cultivation areas in the municipality amounted to just 3,106 hectares out of Bogor’s total area of 11,850 hectares. He asserted that such areas were important for supplying Bogor’s food demands.

“We must maintain these areas. We will no longer issue permits for construction on wetlands and cultivation areas,” Usman said on Monday as quoted by wartakotalive.com.

There are currently 1.1 million people residing in Bogor municipality.

Before the year 2000, wetlands and cultivation areas in Bogor accounted for 8,000 hectares, or more than half of the municipality.

These green areas were considered part of Bogor’s identity. However, since 2005, many developers have built residential, commercial and office developments in such places, significantly reducing Bogor’s green space.
